It's Over?

Just like that, my MLIS program is over...two years of working on some project or another just about everyday... and now it's over. Wow. No graduation ceremony for us summer grads, rather anticlimactic. I have learned so much and have used so much of that knowledge--it's been great. I actually understand now why some librarians look at school librarians and roll their eyes--the school library program needs much more technology exposure. Well, off to play with some of that technology.

Webpage Fun

Full panic mode struck earlier today when I got an email from Chris, who said he couldn't see my webpage. I couldn't get the images to display, but I could (finalmente) see my webpage on various computers, in various browsers, so to hear that he could not see it set off the panic alarms. I played with it more this morning and then went off to the hospital again (oh, did I mention, my Dad is in the hospital with a MRSA infection? Not good, although he looks better.). I came back and started to attack my webpage again, then got an email from Chris, who was able to open my page. Whew, what a relief. I am still going to do some work on this, for my own edification.

Sometimes You're the Windshield, Sometimes You're the Bug

Ouch. Do I feel like the bug, or what? One loved one in the hospital with massive complications from a simple surgery. We visited her yesterday. After leaving that hospital, I got a call that my dad was rushed to the ER. Trying to wrangle CSS in the middle of this is not pleasant nor easy. It seems as if my MLIS program up until this, the very last hours of the very last term, has gone so well and now, everything is a fire drill! I just tried to get my images on my website again, by creating their own special folder, but apparently that isn't good enough for those feisty images! Haven't had much success in creating the link for the Thoreau page either. Oy. I've had fun with building webpages in the past, but it's never been like this. Off to persevere. BTW, Al Gore's book was EXCELLENT! I did manage to finish it.

Another....

It's article day!! Yahoo Pipes this time!
http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6456389.html?nid=3270

Another interesting article. Good idea for school librarians.

Wired Story

http://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscellaneous/news/2007/07/wiimote

Interesting article. I hope the avatars are clothed, unlike the world into which I was dropped in my "Second Life!"

7.26.2007

Serenity Now!

It appears that my webpage is finally "viewable." Unfortunately, the images do not display when I type in the url and view the page. However, they are all there in Kompozer; that combined with having gotten the page to the server and be viewable is an encouraging accomplishment for this morning. Zoomclouds has decided to go goofy--it says I have no saved clouds, it won't display the clouds that are listed as being saved (yeah, go figure!) and when I try to generate a new one, it does what it did before....endlessly pretends to be generating a cloud. Enough for now. Quitting while I am ahead, more later!

7.24.2007

The President Who Reads (and Writes)

Wow, imagine if Gore had retained the presidency to which he was elected--I think we'd be in a different place. I'm reading THE ASSAULT ON REASON and it's such a contrast to the president who doesn't read (or write). Okay, I still haven't figured out the mystery of my webpage, but at least I am enjoying the distractions of good writing and dusty trails. I tried Filezilla again, but my computer won't open it. I feel like the problem child of my class.

7.23.2007

Gotta Love It.

Gotta love the YouTube/CNN debate, especially the snowperson asking the candidates what they will do to ensure the son lives a full life. No more melting snowpeople! Watch AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH again! What a great diversion from....wait no, I refuse to even think about it...web.... no won't do it!!!! Back to the very-now debate!!

Hand me the Ibuprofen!

Oh, my head is going to explode. I have spent hours and hours on trying to actually SEE my webpage. I called the HELP desk today and they said "yep, nothing's there." Well, why not?! Kompozer says it is published, the error message when I go to the url says it's there but it needs a login. The HELP desk offered some "help" which did not seem to help. I tried to drag the file into the directory, but I just get the same message. I've never had so many problems! Time to hit the trail again--maybe the trail all the way to DC, then I really won't have to think about this at all! LOL!

7.19.2007

No Exit

Sartre's dark mood is encroaching on my mindspace today. No dusty trails today, only mud, lightning, etc. Thus, there is no escape. I have been sitting in front of two computers trying to figure out: 1. why can't I see my webpage? 2. what in the world do we do with Feed2JS? I can't even figure out what to download, let alone generating code to put on my webpage that no one can see anyway. It does not help that a certain four-footed, furry companion kept me up most of the night because of: 1. his fear of serious T-storms 2. his irrational desire to go OUT in the storm! Forget ground fog, I have brain fog. I'd say "bon nuit" but it's only a little past noon. C'est la vie.

7.18.2007

Pedaling...

These one day vacations are becoming habit-forming; it was me and 40 miles of dirt trail today along with one very nice cycling companion. However, the answer to my webpage problems has not magically appeared as a vision while biking.... I guess I'll have to keep biking until I have a vision!

7.17.2007

Google Scholar

And now for something completely different....

The sun was shining, the sky was blue and there was nothing ahead of me but trail. It was a hot, dusty 50 mile ride through valleys, fields, rock formations and more, my bike and legs transporting me to a simple land...a land free of high technology... what a great one day vacation!

7.16.2007

Web Page Publishing

Kompozer says it has published my webpage, but I can't get to it because it says the server requires a login. I've tried a lot of different things; time for a chocolate break.

Second Life

Oy, first of all, Second Life does not seem to work properly on my computer--really slowed it down and the graphics are awful. When I "landed" in my Second Life everyone was naked. My son had just walked into the room and I am sure he now wonders what I am really doing in school.
I have read various articles about Second Life, but I couldn't go any further with it because it locked up my computer; frozen, naked avatars, that's my experience of Second Life.

Perseverance

Just kept trying. Grazr kept giving me different things to copy and paste and the one below finally worked. Gees.
http://grazr.com/gzpanel.html?addbar=off&file=http://grazr.com/data/denali97/export.opml.xml

See, I Knew it Couldn't Be!

So, I click on the link and I get a 404 error. Grrr. Curses on Grazr!

The Return of the Widget

http://grazr.com/gzpanel.html?addbar=off&file=http://grazr.com/data/de

It can't be. After working on this ceaselessly in June, with no luck, today it worked? How can this be?

7.13.2007

Kompozer = Headache

I have spent hours trying to publish my Kompozer page. I have no clue why it won't publish. I tried to download Filezilla, after reading posts of others who had done so and then were able to publish their pages. However, Filezilla will not download. Maybe it is because Second Life fried my computer? Nothing is making sense at this point.

7.12.2007

My Head is Spinning

Chris was nice enough to answer my question, but now I don't understand the answer. It's like my directory should already be there? I don't know, I think I need a break--maybe a fresh mind tomorrow will be the best approach.

Web Page Woes

I read in the syllabus that we can use a suitable web page software, rather than Kompozer, so I made my web page in Front Page, since it's sitting on my computer. However, when I follow the instructions for creating my space on the unixs server, I cannot do it. It is so frustrating to have so many assignments in a row where things do not work. Okay, Koha was an exception. :-)
Now Chris has scheduled a help session for the OC visit, which is great, except I do not know if I can be there then, since it wasn't in the original plan. Grrrrr.

7.09.2007

Koha seems to have actually worked. This would be the first thing which has worked lately. Wow.
Here is the link to my shelf:
http://pitt1.kohawc.liblime.com/cgi-bin/koha/bookshelves/shelves.pl?viewshelf=52

By the way, for whatever reason, blogger won't let me put a title on this post!

7.05.2007

Clouds gone now

The dogs are back but my zoomcloud is gone. Oy ve!

Donde estan los perritos?

Hey, where did the dogs go? The photo of my dogs which was on my blog has disappeared. Maybe it will come back.

I got the Koha blues...oh yeah...

I have reviewed the Koha information and I have tried to use the PW and login which I just received a couple of days ago, but I can't log in and I don't know why. I seem to have one too many pieces of info for logging in, so who knows? Someone said this was a "fun" assignment and I sure could use one of those! Grrrrr. On the other hand, it was fun to apply some of what I learned about Web of Science and ENW in another class and in my own research. Thumbs-up on that one.

6.29.2007

Grazr grrrr

Oh, I am so weary of trying to figure things out that simply don't work. My brain is fried--I've aggregated feeds, (not even sure why at this point), I've exported, cut, pasted, saved, etc. and I cannot get my opml file into grazr, ergo, no widget. I also tried to add my other third-party sources to zoomclouds, as instructed, but zoomclouds says "forget it!" (well, it's en ingles, which IS an improvement over last night--ha ha!) Enough torture for one day/night--I'm off to the Daily Show and Colbert for some entertainment!

Seeing through the clouds...

Zoomclouds sure is persnickety. Just for "fun" (am I insane?) I tried to create some other clouds, but zoomclouds has its own ideas. Time to move on to grazr, I suppose. On a side note, I've passed on info about blogger.com, googlereader and google co-op to some interested folks and they think I'm really technologically adept now.

6.28.2007

Hola Ingles

English has made a return to Zoomclouds. This has become amusing. Zoomclouds still won't fetch this blog feed.

Zoomclouds en espanol

Oh gees, I went back to see if I could get my blog feed into a cloud and now Zoomclouds has disappeared, replaced by a Spanish language site, which is not the same. Dios mio. However, as comic relief, I stumbled across blog references to Zoomclouds and it is funny to read since all of the recent ones are from our class. Ha ha.
http://www.technorati.com/posts/tag/zoomclouds

Too funny--you have to read this.

Zoomclouds?

The html code for my cloud is here---wonder if the cloud will show up....

Zoomclouds revisited

Zoomclouds is supposedly fetching my feed from del.icio.us....it's been about 3 minutes so far--I don't think it is supposed to take this long...five minutes....7 minutes...this is not encouraging.

Zoomclouds not zoomin'

Zoomclouds doesn't like my RSS feed for my blog. Just won't process it. I can't believe that I just can't seem to get anything to work! I emailed a link to my Zotero tags to Chris since no matter what I did, they wouldn't import to ENW.

6.26.2007

Zotero continues

Hmm, it still won't work. I don't get it. I've tried many different things. Read the help, did this and did that and still....wrong file shows up.

6.25.2007

Zotero Woes

Try as I do, I cannot get the correct file imported from Zotero into ENW. I don't know what the problem is, as far as I can tell I am selecting the correct file, but then something else shows up in ENW. Weird. So, I am trapped--I can't finish this assignment array. Aghhhhhh. Maybe I need chocolate again....or maybe I should go back to the beach...

LibraryThing

http://www.librarything.com/about

I've been meaning to post this link, although I bet a lot of people already know about this neat site. Anyway, for those who don't, check it out-it's a neat way to keep track of your books.

6.23.2007

Success!

Hey! It works. Wow. How about that? Now I think I'll add a few more sites....

Google Co-Op

http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=017434504403101392074%3A4cl9-r20sge

Well, I'm posting this and then I'll check again to see if it works. Fingers crossed.

Beach Time

Wow, beach time sure is good for the brain. I can't pretend to have discovered any earth-shattering secrets about any of the assignments, but I sure feel better! I am reviewing my bloglines/scopus assignment. I have my url posted, but it just takes me to bloglines with all of my feeds instead of just the scopus folder. I'm not sure what I'm missing. I've read through many of the comments on the db, but still can't figure it out. I'm happy just to have gotten the url and live link up. C'est la vie, no?

6.15.2007

Bloglines here?

http://www.bloglines.com/public/denali97

Wow, did I accomplish this finally? If so, it must have been the chocolate break!

Bloglines

Well, I did what the directions say to do, but it doesn't work. I am going to the beach and probably won't be able to work on this while away since most of this stuff won't work on my laptop.....

Bloglines grrrr

I keep trying to share my Bloglines folder here but it is NOT working!

Bloglines....

Well, I can't figure out how to make a folder in Bloglines and nothing seems to be working.....

Where am I?

Gees, I'm getting things accomplished, but half the time I lose track of what I am doing! I successfully saved a search in Scopus, exporting it, then imported it to EndNoteWeb, then I saw that I had 9 items and I thought I had 10 and needed 10, but now can't find that assignment information.....and I've lost track of zotero. It doesn't help to be working between two computers--one which has some apps and not others---with neither computer having all since that seems to totally screw up the computers!
On top of that, I somehow lost my iPod library today. Somedays technology is a pain!

6.12.2007

Random thoughts....

Well, I said I would engage in random acts of thinking, and so it is. I have succeeded in moving most things (as far as I can tell at this point!) to my other computer. I actually had a couple of uninterrupted hours, allowing me to do that. I have successfully "captured" over 50 items in EndNoteWeb, but I'm not sure how to export them. They are happily sitting in a folder, awaiting my further action! I will delve into how to do that later. I needed a break from it and blogging is a good break... On to the next thing!

6.09.2007

Grrrrrr.......

My computer went wacko several days ago, then right before it crashed, Skype gave me some bizarre message about a serious error. I tried to download Skype onto my other computer, but it wouldn't work......

6.03.2007

Flashers

Well, perhaps some of my technology isn't working, but some is--that's a bonus. The flash meeting worked okay tonight, especially after I figured out to use the "start broadcasting" button instead of the "interrupt"---so rude!!! :-)
I suppose I will invest in a camera--it was fun to see a few folks. I am not sure what happened with skype. I was able to run a couple of chats and I did successfully complete a conference call with a few folks. I never saw Chris in skype, so I'm not sure what was happening there.
This all gives me hope for getting more technology to work!! Onward!!!

Technology Headaches

Well, due to technological obstacles, I have not been able to post for over a week. I am trying to move most everything required for this course onto my older computer and I hope to rejuvenate my newer computer, so that it stops giving me headaches!!! I seem to remember a similar problem with a previous course in which I had to download a lot of things...hmmmm....connection? coincidence? Frustrating? YES!

5.25.2007

Technology Sloooowdown

Hmmm, is it coincidence since I have loaded all of these "extras" onto my computer that it has slowed down tremendously? This is not a good thing. I may move everything onto my older computer and see if my laptop comes back to life. I can't stand a slow computer, especially when it used to be fast.

5.21.2007

Zotero is Sweet!

Wow! Just played with Zotero and I have to go do some comparing with Connotea. Zotero seems to be ultra-functional. This is exciting!

The Adventure Continues

Well, the nicecast was quite the experience. It is so frustrating when the technologies do not work. It will be interesting to see how the journey unfolds...will we be able to use the anticipated technologies? Being in a school library has certainly taught me to always have a back-up plan for when, not if, the technology fails. Let the adventure continue.....

Connotea

http://www.dlib.org/dlib/april05/lund/04lund.html

I read this article many moons ago, when beginning my MLIS journey. It's come back to haunt me, but haunting can be good. Just wanted to share the link. Of course, I have it bookmarked in my Connotea. That's how I found it so easily. Go ahead, try Connotea. :-)

5.16.2007

So far...

Two chapters read, so far, so good. No surprises yet. :-)
My second grader is doing podcasts of his book reviews, at school. I helped students at the other elementary school do podcasts of their book reviews. It's a great technology. Now, to get them blogging!
